Criminals prey on the weak and unprotected. Carrying a gun, particularly openly as Melanie Hain did, lets the bad guy know you're neither.
Average response time for police varies from area to area, but you can almost guarantee when the dipshit whacko starts shooting at a kids' soccer game, or a college campus, or a mall, or a church, or any other place "you don't need a gun", the police won't be there in time to stop it.
