a rec is a letter of recommendation from a member of a sorority to a specific chapter. It basically introduces the potential new member (PNM) to the chapter and gives the chapter members more information about her than the bare bones that the application provides.

it technically isn't the responsibility of the PNM to get the recs, but it never hurts to ask friends, teachers, mothers of friends, relatives to see if they are greeks and would be willing to send a rec to the chapter.
