Since ABC and NBC were both present, I'm going to guess that someone asked him what he thought about it. And I have no problem with what he said. The president is asked all kinds of questions, I mean, why did the media ask Bush about baseball and crap like that? They do it because our president is first and foremost a person, and they know that people like to hear things about the president and his family that we little people can relate to.

The scene was also all over the news/Web, so in fact I think it was a very "current" event for them to ask him about. You may have also noticed that some news organizations have been tying Kanye in with Serena Williams and Joe Wilson in open dialogues about the lack of manners and civility in our modern society. As the leader of our society, many people feel the president should weigh in on and try to influence these things. If even just as a role model.
