Duly noted, I edited my post to better reflect what I was originally thinking.

To the OP,
Sisterhood and brotherhood is wonderful, but it doesnt just happen. Its extremely hard for orgs to get started, and honestly, at a three year college like that, it will be even more difficult.

I think its great to want to help kids, and its great to want to form bonds with people. But, you dont need greek letters to do that. Its not the letters on your chest that will make you special or make your friendships meaningful, its how you and your organization works together. The people you are with could put all your effort into helping a children's fund this season in time for Christmas instead of setting up a Greek letter org, you would bond much better over that experience and do much more to help. In 5 years, maybe your efforts could grow into an active, healthy, large group of individuals and they could entertain the idea of making it into a GLO.

In the end, if you start something from the ground up, you honestly wont reap any of the benefits of it, you will be doing it for the people in probably 4 years....I would honestly do something that is going to make you happy now and help people now, and hopefully you can set it up that it keeps going, but if not, at least you made a difference in the community for a year or two.
