What I think people forget is that these are HUGE universities and once school starts, here comes the 80% of the population who could care less about recruitment and won't bat an eyelash at you getting cut (because they probably don't care).

This is another reason I hate the concept of before-school rush. No balance. There is NOTHING else going on; this is your whole world. (Why do you think all those people actually fall in love with the Bachelor/Bachelorette/Flavor Flav?)

In this context, yes, it bothers me because it's grammatically incorrect, not because of the word itself. It should "recently were pledged to sororities" instead. "Pledged" makes it sound like they're done with their program and initiation is tomorrow.
There is a girl from Alaska who got a bid to Alpha Phi! I think she gets the distance award.
