I think the article mentions that if they find young kittens they sometimes try to turn them into pets, but the adult cats are too wild to be pets.

And as far as being a wild animal goes, being a cat on a college campus who has been vaccinated as well as spayed or neutered is probably a pretty sweet gig. There probably aren't a lot of natural predators and there's probably a pretty decent food supply most of the year, at least.
