Sometimes people act gossipy and backstabbing when they are afraid of losing their friends. If their friends are moving ahead in their lives, making more money or new friends, they can feel threatened. In an attempt to even the playing field, they try to knock others down in order to elevate themselves and feel better. It is actually pretty sad. Good luck!
