On my campus we have the sigeps, who (this is what i've HEARD so it may just be our Sig Ep chapter-- it may be national IDK) have Golden Heart Girls, they were like little sisters, but they were basically classy ladies who the sig eps felt were to be honerd for their classyness. One of our local sororitys was founded by a group of golden heart girls, since then GHG are no more, at least for sure in our chapter. It was much like being a sweet heart... but you could NOT wear the letters Sigma Phi Epsilon. (Girlfriends could always wear shirts like I <3 my sig ep, or what not)

Sigma Pi on our campus still has a sweet heart, she is the only non girlfriend girl who is allowed to wear the letters Sigma Pi. She is a non sorority girl. and even after becomming sweetheart does not join a sorority.

Theta Tau use to have little sisters who would wear a sister pin, but that is no more due to some of their chapters being co-ed (they are a proff. eng fraternity that only has 10 or so male only chapters left)

I am a deepher, we are not allowed to do official big/little mixers with any of the fraternites, but we do have mixers with them. Often doing a rotation with the groups and the other sororites. So this semester we will mix with sig ep and possibly sig pi, last semester we were with phi kaps and alpha sigs (7 fraternities, 3 sororites means we have to double) Letters do not get exchanged. we just enjoy spending time with the fraternities. Many of our girls are dating the guys. We use to do big/little, but nationals made us take it off our website, and stop doing it.

Girls are no longer joining sororities to find their husbands ... (well, i'm sure some are- but not the norm) ... so there is no big reason I can see for big/little mixers. The idea of being handcuffed for the night to some frat boy who's getting drunk that I just met... is kinda lame.
