The SS was there but I serioulsy doubt they would have EVER thought shoes would have been thrown at the POTUS. In fact, a couple SS men went up to protect Pres Bush & he waved them off.
Here is an article about the lack of SS:

The SS job is part of the protocol, customs and culture of the area as directed by the President. They advise him of the appropriateness of SOME duties he upholds.
Sure, they may have not know that anyone would hurl shoes at the US president. But they should have know that doing so is of great insult as seen in Arab-culture. That is why some credentials are checked.
Now, we are not talking about a country with decades old fully functional, established constitution with branches of government... We are talking about a very unstable questionable government that is supported by the United States at this time. If we are supporting it, then, the Detail and anyone else deemed essential would want to be looking at EVERYBODY'S credentials and possible "plant" who they wanted there and refused letting anyone else in there just for the photo op. Yeah, I said it. Our US government does that...
That is the job of the SECRET Service and any other intelligence agency of the USA. I know folks who do work for these agencies and let's just say, some stuff is well within their control...
This incident, should have been. To play stupid means someone failed somewhere. That fool needs to lose their job because of this... Or they aren't in charge of checking plants in meetings with the POTUS, etc...
Cuz if he let that looney tune into this meeting hurling shoes at our Leader, who else is he letting in?
That's like me asking for $50 dollars worth of circus tickets... LOL...
