Hmmm....my turn to psychologize her.
Elina's an adamant vegetarian, very strongly invested in human/animal rights, kind of swingy on sexuality...very "liberal," in a word. My guess would be her mom holds opposite values and really rejected Elina's lifestyle, especially the sexuality piece (parents tend to get uptight about that). That's why Elina hates her mom, but at the same time blasts people who don't hold the same values she does. She is fighting for the right to have her own identity and do things her way which makes her a control freak; scared that people will reject her so she remains emotionally guarded; but yet she still rails against those who don't think like her because that's how she has been treated and is therefore all she knows.
Yes, I pulled all of that out of my butt. And it was fun.
