Lavalering: A Brother of Sigma Nu gives his signifigant other a set of letters called a lavaleer(spelling). This set of letters is usualy in the form of a pendant, or charm for a braclet this is a way for a brother to say to this girl, that they are in a "serious" relationship.

Pinning: When you are even more serious, (some equate pinning with giving someone a "promise ring" ie a ring saying they would like to eventuly be engaged, in oversimplified terms). When pinned, a girl may wear letters, and your badge(when she is dressed nicely)

Some soroities, like Delta Delta Delta have what they call candlepassing cerimonies.
They light a candle(in DDD), and pass it around the circle of sisters. And if goes around once, the sister has been lavaleered. 2 times, pinned, 3 times engaged, 4 times married, 5 times pregnant. After it goes around the circle the number of times for what had happened to them, the girl who was pinned or whatnot, stops, and tells everyone what happened. When candle passing happens, normaly, many of the sisters have no idea who had what happen to them, so its a suspense surprise thing. At least here at knox.

lavaleering/pinning means more to greek women than to "GDI's" in most cases.
