Wow, sorry for bumping an old thread (I just realized it was last posted on in 2004. yikes! I haven't been able to find, really, ANY other exclusively canadian sorority-related threads so if I've missed a more recent one ... sorry!) but I just wanted to add quickly ... University of Toronto has 7 sororities and sevenTEEN fraternities? Whaaaat the heck! That just blew me away!

I think the main issue with the lack of interest in Greek life in Canada is just that a lot of people (or at least a lot of people I've encountered whom I've talked about this with) really can't shake off the negative connotations that are often associated with it and with the whole "Americanized" image that it's been branded with. And Canadians really take their pride seriously when it comes to fighting against independence from the States. (I was devastated when I heard HBC was bought out recently. Man. I mean, it was like the FIRST Canadian company ever! To have that taken away ... but I digress.)

I was even kind of iffy about the whole thing (I'm a freshman at U of T) and about recruitment in general ... and I won't lie, the hesitation was because of the aforementioned reasons. But I just went through the first stage of recruitment and I'll be visiting the chosen four houses this weekend and I'm pretty excited about it! It looks like a fabulous way of meeting new people and the girls seemed nice. Some of them a little fake and overdoing it, but I'd assume that's so everywhere and especially because it was only the first day and all that ... I'm sure we were all nervous. But I'm definitely interested in two groups already and hopefully things will work out.

It's really about getting the word out, especially to younger people you know. Before I even got to uni a couple of my friends who were older than I was chose to go with Greek life when they started out and they were really happy with the choices they made and they let me know so .. really, it comes down to spreading the word! So ... yeah! Go Canadian Greeks!
