My question is when I see it refered to on GC its as a staple to southern fratty style and I even saw pics where a Florida school had a Vineyard Vines recruitment theme. So i guess my questions is what made a small brand from Martha's Vineyard become a huge staple and style symbol down south???

Vineyard Vines is associated with fishing, yachting, drinking, football and so on. It just makes sense.

Because when something bad happens in a really big car – accidentally speeding through the middle of a gang of unruly young people who have been taunting you in a drive-in restaurant, for instance – it happens very far away – way out at the end of your fenders.
