Most people don't attempt to understand linguistics before they imitate dialects, accents, and slang. Most people just go based on how it sounds. And some people sound similar to what he was depicting, however that doesn't make the mockery any less insulting.

I was going to make this very point! Linguistics was the most interesting class out of all my courses as an English major. The most interesting piece of information I learned is that the action of speech is parasitic. That is, the muscles and organs we use for speech exist for more primal human processes.
Knowing how speech develops in humans, and how different speech patterns develop and are cultivated, helped me immensely in studying several different languages, and even moreso now as a studying actress. Not to mention that it's very interesting!
