No, it's not a "Southern thing..." It may be a "local thing" in some regional areas of the South, but do not call it a "Southern thing." It most certainly isn't and saying so, quite honestly, makes Southerners look like some of the rush-obsessed crazies of GC.
In my little corner of the South, you don't go onto the society page unless you have an engagement, marriage, birth, or death. If you do get in the society pages for something else, people know you're a pretentious bitch.
