This thread made me chuckle, as I went through rush in 1973, and one of my pref houses featured a Wizard of Oz skit, (there's nooooo place like hooooome!). It was well done, but I thought the theme was silly and out of date then!
I was sitting on the front row, being preffed by a senior I absolutely loved from the first round party, listening to another rushee in the back of the room (later found out she was an in-house legacy) sobbing hysterically, seeing the girl next to me tearing up, as Dorothy found her way home. I thought, "This skit is making me want to either 1) giggle or 2) gag, but bawling my eyes out is not option 3. Pref parties were 90 minutes, so fortunately, it also included conversation, songs, refreshments and a candle/flower ceremony, so the munchkin overdose was diluted by the time the party ended.
I pledged (in spite of the skit--it was a great chapter), and for the next two years faked enthusiasm for a pref night the rest of the house (and many rushees) LOVED. Fortunately, one year I was a Rush Counsellor, (rho chi, now...) so "missed" it. Darn. The year after I graduated, they changed it to something sophisticated and beautiful. Double Darn.
That being said, no matter what skit or theme you choose, some actives and PNMs will love it, others will be neutral or negative. In my experience, while a great skit can help showcase talent and creativity, it doesn't replace great conversations and genuine bonding as a deal closer.
