Well, of course Kentucky immediately comes to mind. Close to a number of larger cities but as far as I'm concerned it's perfect.

If you want a bigger town and better academics, then Vanderbilt.

Other than that, you can do what my son has been doing for months which is research and visit schools. The normal college search stuff. Oh, and keep your grades and extra-curriculars up through your junior and senior years, and take your AP exams.
