I have actually been strongly considering writing a memoir about my college years for some time. We'll see if it ever happens.

SO... WHAT HAPPENED??

We were supposed to hear in the afternoon if we did not get a bid. We did not hear anything so in the late afternoon, our Rho Chi comes by and hands our bids!! My roommate and I both went (this should not be a surprise at all):

HALEY!!

We got our things ready and the Haley girls came to pick us up. My hometown girl came to pick us up and Roommate's friend that picked me up from Skit Night came to pick her up. We could hear all the sororities running through the halls singing their songs like crazy!! I remember being bummed out when I heard the Peytons and to some extent the Nathans singing (the Haleys did not go crazy and sing in the dorms - although we saw to it that this changed in the future!).

I also saw University Big Peyton (she had come back for the semester by that point evidently) on the walk over the house and she gave me a helpless look.

When we got to the house, though, all the Haleys were out on the second floor porch singing and going crazy! We ran up the stairs through a bunch of streamers and such.

At the house, we did icebreakers and played 90s rap music and danced and ate pizza. We also got to see the third floor of the house (which I'd never gotten to see before) and I was really impressed by the rooms and bathroom.

We took a bunch of Bid Day pictures... what else did we do? It seems like we did a craft of some kind. I remember being somewhat bummed out, because my pledge class was so small. Quota that year was 34 or 35, and Haley had gotten around 28 - the only house that hadn't made quota. I think this was part of the reason the Haleys seemed more subdued picking us up in the dorms.

One thing I noticed was how many people I already knew in Haley. I had to admit that I knew way, way more people in Haley than in Peyton. In fact I knew a good portion of the chapter. One of my dance friends came up to me and said "Oh, you know, I was saying to myself, we're really screwed if we don't get 20something. Please God, let us get 20something." LOL. That's when I realized that this house really DID want me. They weren't the most bubbly crazy rushtastic group of girls. But they wanted me.

I also knew a good portion of the girls in my pledge class. I was surprised a few of them were in Haley. One was my Texas pledge sister (I found out she was a legacy to Haley as well). There were a few others.

We all spent the night at the house that night and the next AM we had a pledge ceremony. That was really, really special.

At my college, the fraternity bid day is the day after the sororities. The sororities have their bid day on Friday evening and then on Saturday afternoon guys (who get their bids on Friday) show up at the house they choose in the afternoon. And immediately start drinking and getting hazed. Then in the evenings, once the 24-hour rule for Bid Day expires, the sororities have pre-parties and head out to the fraternities - all the fraternities have crazy band parties.

Here's what I found out about where my guy friends went:

-Most of my friends had gone to Nerdy Campus Leader Frat. A lot of guys had been torn between Nerdy Campus Leader Frat and and Hippie/Yuppie Frat. Hippie/Yuppie Frat had gotten strippers for their bid party (completely illegal, but fraternities at my school totally ignore things like that and always get away with it) and evidently it backfired with a lot of my guy friends because they were completely sketched out by it.
-A few of my friends went to MOR/Central frat - including the guy who'd comforted me and encouraged me to go Haley. I think I forgot to mention this, but this guy had encouraged me to come by MOR/Central for his bid night party.
-One of my friends went to Just Plain Nerdy Frat.
-I had a few friends that unexpectedly went Northern Jock Frat.
-Only a few of my friends ended up joining Violent Drinking Frat.

Once the 24-hour rule expired, Haley had a party at one of the off-campus houses Haleys lived in. We all dressed in black and they gave us glow jewelry and glow in the dark shot glass necklaces with letters on them (LOL - ILLEGAL!!!). I remember having the BEST TIME EVAR!!!! at this party and really being so relieved that Haleys DID party. So, we weren't having a fraternity mixer. So what? I got to know the Haleys better this way anyway. I met two really cool girls that I didn't know before in my pledge class and we really quickly became good friends. Roommate and Floormate were there as well. (Poor Hallmate - my heart still goes out to her about this night.)

After the Haley pre-party, we headed out to the frats. I went to a bunch of different ones. I ended up the night at MOR/Central. It was crazy! When the Haleys walked in a bunch of guys dumped coolers of beer on us (this was pretty par for the course for guys' bid night at my school. I considered this as awesome.) My guy friend who'd comforted me was really happy to see me (if really, really trashed). He gave me a big hug and congratulated me on Haley and said there were some advantages to going there. I looked around and saw a bunch of the Girls from Across the Street, who'd all gone Peyton. They were wearing tshirts with really dirty messages on them (as were all the new members from Nathan and Lucas - I'll give Brooke this, I don't think I ever saw their new members in sleazy bid night shirts during my four years). I was really horrified by the shirts. It looked like a few of the new Peytons were horrified as well - including the one who had originally told me she wanted Haley or nothing. The next day one of my friends depledged Peyton (not, interestingly enough, Haley or nothing girl).

I ended up making out with my friend the MOR/Central pledge. We ended up dating for 8 months. He was my first real love.

So that concludes the Bid Day post. I'll be back with a where are they now post in a moment.
