33Girl Is Right: It Depends
If your IFC is strong and organized to help fraternities, then it's worthwhile to be a member. If, however, if the IFC is simply a front for the administrative types who use it to enforce their will on the fraternities, then you should see IFC for what it is. At least one school has the IFC, which is somewhat of an arm of the administration, and they also have a presidents' council, which is composed of just the fraternity presidents, uninfluenced by the administration. Cooperation is in everyone's self interest, but the fraternities can and should protect their rights. On several occasions the presidents have asked alumni/attorneys to represent their position to the administration. It works well as long as no one becomes uncivil.
