Texas will have its first-ever sales tax holiday on Saturday, Sunday and Memorial Day on certain household appliances carrying the Energy Star logo.

Purchasers will save the 6.25 percent state sales tax plus local sales taxes, which in cities such as Houston and San Antonio will be an additional savings of 2 percent.

Statewide, shoppers are expected to save about $2.6 million, the state comptroller's office estimated.

Tax-exempt items, purchased either in a store or from an Internet or catalog seller doing business in Texas, will include:

* Air conditioners priced less than $6,000 (The tax break doesn't apply to installation costs.)

* Ceiling fans
* Dehumidifiers
* Dishwashers
* Refrigerators priced less than $2,000
* Clothes washers (but not clothes dryers)
* Programmable thermostats
* Incandescent and fluorescent light bulbs

Anyone else taking advantage of this? Lowes is offering an additional 10% off on certain energy star appliances. I’m thinking about picking up a new window unit for the garage.
