Definitely check on what you can put on the walls. There are adhesive things you can put up that don't mar the wall surface, so that might work.
If you really want to get away from the bare white walls, check out party supply stores and look for something called Scene Setters. There are a bunch of different kinds - fiesta, beach, Las Vegas, Princess, western, etc.
