the issue that many nphc chapters have with other organizations adopting stepping is that there is no appreciation or understanding of its origins. it is an nphc tradition, no doubt. and tradition is rooted in history, a history that multicultural organization don't share. groups start doing it because they think it's cool, not out of a real respect and that is a problem for me. all too often multicultural organizations pick up things from this place and that and call it original and you will always get heat for that. to clarify, that is not hatred. that is disdain for an organization capitalizing off the contributions of another culture. we had the asian student association come to our nphc meeting to discuss themes that might be objectionable to them, in an effort to avoid disrespecting anyone.

we have a couple of groups down here in georgia and there has already been tension because those groups have crossed the line between tribute and disrespect. they had taken to using racial slurs (the n-word) to refer to each other, claiming that it was a part of their "culture". some girls calling themselves "Deltas" and making a handsign very similar to Delta Sigma Theta's sign. all of these things leave a sour taste in my mouth and make me question what is really going on.
