The latter, sadly.

DH and I both fill up when the gas gauge shows 1/4 tank. I drop $40+ on a fill-up - 13-gal tank, premium only. $4ish per gallon * 10ish gallons = $40ish per fill-up.

DH drops $50+ per fill-up. He puts regular in his SUV, but then again, it's an SUV. He does mostly highway driving, and I do mostly local driving (to the train station) - and we get the same fuel efficiency. He just had to have the boat.
