Munchkin, you've got me. I have this disease where I never know the price of stuff that I'm buying - sometimes even after I've paid for it. Thus, while I could probably tell you the carat weight of a ring, I have no idea when it comes to prices. It never dawned on me to think of that...seriously. But now, if someone has not worked in a jewelry store, how would that person have an idea of how much the ring cost.

You would buy him "something cool." Would that be on par with what he spent on your ring - since you will know what that amount is?
