I don't have a problem with people bringing difficult issues to the boards. In fact, I enjoy hearing people's opinions! The problem with this hazing thread is that it really does NOT happpen at most colleges/universities! It just isn't tolerated! Why on EARTH would so many people go greek if they had to endure humiliating, painful, and pointless practices?? The answer is, they wouldn't.

I'm sorry if you felt attacked, Cloud9, but I doubt that was anyone's intent. For myself personally, I read your initial post and felt that it was making some hasty generalizations in a hostile manner, but maybe you really are genuinely concerned. Furthermore, it is unfortunate, but there have been quite a few instances recently where people with 2 -3 posts have come on, (usually it's the same few people) and post their trash and then leave, create a new username, come back, post trash again, etc. Some of these *individuals* basically talk trash and pull things out of their ass, so it's hard not to be skeptical. If you stick around, trust me....you'll know what I mean.

I'm not saying Hazing has never happened, but I find that this issue is often blown way out of proportion and I, for one, refuse to believe that a few bad apples (or vengeful individuals who are "Sour grapes" about not making the cut) could taint the image of the Greek System everywhere. It TRULY matters to me what potential/future Greeks think when they come to Greekchat, and I would hate for someone not to rush because they think everyone at ABC University or everyone in DEF sorority will haze them. It's also VERY important to note that "hazing" is in NO way a uniquely Greek thing - however it's so often attached by people who have no clue about the Greek system. I'm truly sorry if it really is a problem at your school. As DZRose said, there is a *huge* difference between local sororities and NPC sororities. Cloud9, regardless of whether this local is affiliating or not, it's probably safe to say that until now they have not been held accountable to anything NPC, right??? I guarantee you, if they actually affiliate, there will be NONE of that crap going on. In the meantime, I would go speak with the Greek Advisor/Student activities advisor at NYU and explain what is happening, being very specific about who it is, and what you have heard. It's also right for you to express concern about this being held against the Greek population as a whole, and I personally can't imagine why any school official would want something like this to get out and damage NYU's reputation - I'll do some more thinking and try to PM you with ideas.
Good luck!
