I don't know how it is in your state, but in mine you aren't elligible for unemployment right away if you were fired for cause (which it sounds like you were). I believe you have to wait five weeks in my state if it was for cause, rather than immediately if you were laid off for reasons no fault of your own.
Anyway, are you sure you have to go down to an office? A lot of states let you file over the phone or online now.
