A black and tan can be made with either Harp or Bass. The Guinness, of course, is a must. A black and tan in a half-yard or yard glass is an impressive sight.

My mother tells me that when she was in med school in Scotland, it was common to see on a patient's chart, "One pint Guinness, hours of sleep." (Some patients preferred sherry.)

When I was growing up, my mom prepared corned beef and cabbage for St. Patrick's Day dinner, followed by Irish coffee. I hate, loathe, and detest corned beef and cabbage. But I had two choices: choke it down or go hungry. These days, we usually just make some Irish coffee.
