I just completed my son's paperwork for the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War. Still working on mine for the National Society Daughters of the Union 1861-1865, the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War 1861-1865 and the National Society United States Daughters of 1812. I had the applications for the Order of the First World War and the First Families of Louisiana around here somewhere but they seem to have dissappeared.
I had ancestors on both sides of the Civil War. The families were still fighting it when my mother was named. Can you imagine those in-law problems??

Exactly! That's why you join chapters that are out-of-state!

Societies I'm eligible for (the dues REALLY start adding up!):
Founders of Ancient Windsor, Founders of New Haven Colony, Colonial Dames, Loyalists and Patriots, Guild of Artisans and Tradesmen, Presidents and First Ladies, Colonial Daughters of the 17th Century, Colonial Clergy, Antebellum Bench and Bar, Winthrop Society, and Daughters of Norway (just found out that one in this thread!).

Societies that I am SO close to being eligible for:
Mayflower (1 generation missing documentation!), Magna Charta, and Descendants of the Illegitimate Sons & Daughters of the Kings of Britain (and I'm sure there are some others as well!)
Don't you just love those Mormons & their penchant for genealogy (even if you disagree with the "why")? And the dues things is one of the real reasons I don't dig up a bunch more.

I know this one little old lady who has this long bar, with minature badges for each of her societies. She had things like "Daughters of Chaplains of the War of Your Choice", the same thing with doctors & camp followers - some really obscure ones!

As for family mottos, I'm just so sure that mine is "Never Leave a Paper Trail"!
