As far as I am concerned, the company sponsoring the contest is just covering its ass. The essay was either 1) NOT the best one, but they gave it to her just because of the political angle or 2) was the best one they received and she won it fair and square.
They should have done their homework to make sure they were giving the prize to someone who had a true essay if they were so concerned about the validity of the essay.
They should not have to. But we all know there are lying sacks of shit in this world.
Like I said, I feel sorry for the little girl who thought she had won this contest. She only did what she was told by her mom. But, in the end, she's the one paying for this.

In regards to the essay, I don't think it could have been THAT good. That has been in the news a lot b/c its in the DFW area. The news aired a public apology from the mom not too long ago, and they had a camera shot of the "essay" submitted by the girl.
It was like 2 sentences. Something like "I'm really sad because my dad was serving the country and died in Iraq a couple of weeks ago".
When I was school, an essay was a few paragraphs long
