The only thing that bothers me about the restaurant's behavior is that they didn't tell the guys first. If they had been regular customers they were aware of price of the buffet; it doesn't seem right to change the cost of the food after the fact when they gave them the bill. If nothing else, it seems like false advertising.
If the owner want to set any limits, I think it's fine as long as they post them.
