In NPHC terminology (this is my understanding as an outsider), you are:

- an interest or potential if attending a mixer or rush activity. It is understood by everyone you have done your research and are using discretion
- Prospective candidate that is ONLY known between you and your chosen organization--meaning you have submitted your paperwork and are currently having your application reviewed (Future "abc" is still incorrect--you may still NOT be extended an invitation to join...)
- a soror or brother if you are formally initiated, meaning that HQ KNOWS you have undergone a formal process and you have legitimately received notice that you are a full member. We can tell when one has not...
