This isn't so much weird as outrageous. I was just checking out a friend's registry (at Nordstrom) and saw:
*a $250 gravy boat
*$200 salt and pepper shakers
*a $100 wooden mixing bowl
Seriously? I've heard of having nice things on your registry, but I think that's a bit much.
