As much as I love and treasure my badge, I gotta agree with you on that. I've always thought they looked kinda neat, but it's harder to tell they're a pin with meaning from afar - could be you just like kites, whereas a badge that's shaped like what it is I think is obvious it's not just a random pretty pin. I dunno, I'm torn!
Ultimately, I think all badges look better with a guard though - makes them more official looking I think!
