I'd go with H2oot's advice -
Be upfront and honest.
As someone who has been on the other person's side, it can hurt your friend more if you lead them on or play upon their emotions. I liked this guy friend of mine but wasn't totally crushing...he caught wind of it and then avoided me for the longest time. Then when I went to ask him to go with me to Homecoming as friends he blew me off and caused me to cry.
Be a mature adult. Don't go making yourself unattractive because you should be flattered that a friend has taken notice in you. You never know, maybe things could work out...maybe not.
But be honest, sympathetic, and don't drag out the situation and tell all your other friends,"Oh my gosh can you believe he likes me ewww..." sorta thing.
