as a former Capital One rep, ive heard it all, especially about college students. during training, it was asked about unfair practices from card companies on college campuses. our trainer laughed and said, "we dont care what they do with the card, you just make sure they keep it!"
they started us off in a queue, for the life of me i cant remember what it was called, but it was something to do with young and broke, our main goal was to sweet talk these collegians into keeping their $400 credit card with an 18.99% apr. we were to offer them NOTHING extra at all, unless they were adamant about cutting the card off. then, i could add $100, or drop the rate to 15% or so. some kids had 4 or 5 accounts with us, all $500 or less, all 15% apr or greater. it was unreal...
i advise anyone that wants a card and is mature enough to get a card, try a small one and use it only in emergencies. i myself, only have one card, with a $700 limit, which is pretty handy in case my car breaks down. the card companies are predators, and the same ones who will throw 18 cards at you in college, will laugh in your face ten years later when you are trying to apply to re-establish your credit. think about it...
