Pretty much stick with REK, James McMurtry, and Townes Van Zandt and the other old guys.

Now I'm no music snob, but for me personally its a question of the songwriting and the ability of the songwriter to tell a story. Yeah when I was in HS I was all over REK's "No. 2 Live Diner" album and Pat Green cause they sang about Texas and getting drunk. For some reason all of Cory Morrow's songs sound the same to me, lyrics and melody.
Now if I listen to Texas country its Randy Rogers and Reckless Kelly with a little Roger Creager. Still songs about Texas and drinking, but I think Reckless Kelly's Live at the Zona Rosa CD is a truly stellar live music recording.
