My Dr. said that is a common misconception about IUDs. It is for women in committed relationships (preferably married), but I have heard of single women getting them after STD and other testing.
Also, you can have one if you have never been pregnant. I am married with no children and have one. The reason they say this is insertion can be very painful. Check out their website...they have some pretty good info on there
