I would say that
some people are that ignorant. But the people who do the titles for shows or movies like "GREEK" or "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" aren't ignorant at all -- they're trying to make the title eye-catching and Greek-looking. I've seen plenty of Greek restaurants (owned by Greeks who certainly aren't ignorant and who understand that
Greek itself is not the Greek word for "Greek") do the same thing. It's been going on a long, long time.
