Actually it was. It was hyped up to be by the Rocafella camp. Dang, I'm in Boston and they were running the blitzkrieg ads on the radio out here for it for a munite. They stopped in the middle of the day when it came out just to play "Ether" and then "super ugly."
"Super Ugly" only became a "minor studio freestyle" AFTER it was deemed unworthy of battle by the Hot 97 poll in NYC. Also, the funny thing is, Jay says he doesn't write down any lyrics, so technically, isn't every song a freestyle recording (before he memorizes it).
But I gotta agree, when it comes to record sales its all Roc-a-Fella, and in an industry based on platinum plaques, I guess you gotta respect the fact that he is playing the game right.
