The article you posted says that she's starring in the Opera version, not the musical version. I'm inclined to think you're correct though, since I doubt Beyonce could pull off an Italian Opera. Hell, like you, I'm having doubts she can pull off the musical...and Elton John/Tim Rice music, while catchy and nice is hardly considered difficult repertorie.
ETA: Upon second look at the article, it first says musical, then Opera, so apparently whoever wrote it doesn't know the difference.
