I remember reading a study done by a sociologist who came to the conclusion that the reason we (and more often than not, it's US) give our children these kinds of names is because we want our children to know that they're "special" and "different" in a world that will show them every day that they're not valued because of the colour of their skin. The same sociologist also believed that it had something to do with the fact of the death rates in African American communities, especially among young Black men - since your child most likely wouldn't grow up to be a doctor, lawyer, professor, or head of a major corporation, his or her distinction should come from the name you gave them.
I wish I could remember the scholar who did the study, but it was a long time ago that I read it.
