Like everyone else has said...go for it. I went through informal recruitment the fall semester of my sophomore year, visited 3 houses, and didn't get invited back to any, most likely because my GPA was a few tenths of a point below their chapter minimums. I went through again in the spring with my heart set on a house from the beginning. I was still a little under their minimum GPA and got cut from that house and a few others that I was sort of interested in, but stayed in because there were still plenty I liked. I ended up in a house that I hadn't really even considered before I went through spring recruitment and I have never met a more amazing group of women in my life.
Everyone says it, but keep an open mind when you're going through. Just because you heard that XYZs were dorks or that ABCs were all blonde skanks doesn't mean it's true - and even if there is some truth to it, who cares? In 4 years when college is over the reputations are gone and you'll be able to say you've made the best friends you could ever have, and that you are still a part of an amazing national (I assume) organization.
