I think the royal family has learned from what happened with Charles and Diana and Camilla that it may not be best to insist the future prince/king marry a royal. There is evidence that the royal family was fond of Kate, even extending to her the royal protection service, which was quite significant for the monarchy. Also including her in public and family gatherings/events.
