I think basically you can mesh the two thoughts together, that after he survived through all his tests and trials, he faced the final test to choose between sacrificing himself to save others, or to live on. He lived his life through those events, and he sees that the lives of these kids are precious for the future. And he chose his final answer at that place at that time...
