He has let the streets go. I mean think about it. He left a life of crime alone, married, and is working hard to raise his son. He still has ties to the street because those are his people too. Lem feels "comfortable" there. The streets help him cope with Terri's crazy azz and it also will help him in raising his son. You know he can show him what he had to overcome and how he turned his life around. IMO, Lem is a great role model for his son and Ahmad.
His desire to find out who burned down the store is a natural one and because he has ties to the streets, he will be far more successful than the police.
