For Alpha Phi Omega, I don't know of anyone who goes that far to "rescue" pins. Part of that is that the pins that brothers get pinned on them at inititation is *very* plain. It is the same size and shape as the pledge pin (different markings) and is sold by the National Office for $4.
Since we are have a heavy scouting heritage, I can easily imagine an Alpha PHi Omega pin as part of a scouting collection for a non-brother. I guess I'm OK with that as long as they don't try to represent themselves as a brother.
