We never did a shoe hunt. Our favorite was a string untangle that led to an item of clothing or some other mysterious item. Then the bigs revealed a matching T-shirt or a coordinating gift in some way. This also allowed for trickery when littles thought they had it figured out.. they'd switch items around to cause a fake out.
Our chapter didn't require any "gifts" though we made posters to start the strings at. Everyone got a gift (besides the matching item) and the traditional initiation present was lavaliers but they started doing "wall plaques" *coughpaddlescough* my senior year.
