The guy who was running for govenor at the time promised the Chicago Polish that he would give them a Polish holiday if they would vote for him. So they did, and he did. I don't think most schools/banks/gov offices get it off anymore, though.

Yeah, I know it's a Chicago Polish holiday, but how great was it for the downstate kids to get off on Pulaski day and have no idea why
