Do you mean that he plead guilty to manslaughter by reason of acting in the heat of passion (in other words, no premeditation or deliberation)? There is no actual "crime of passion."

Appeals don't work that way -- you don't get more time on appeal, just a ruling as to whether the trial was fair and free of prejudicial error (or in this case, whether the guilty plea was properly entered and accepted) and whether the sentence was within proper parameters and based on proper findings.
