When it happened to me, it was in front of his relatives. I thought I could get out of it by just not saying anything (thankfully, his relatives talked so much - which may have been on purpose, seeing my discomfort- that I got away without having to say flat out no in public). But, I can feel what you're saying. It's like those people that propose to people on television, and the girl says NO.
